In May, Arcadia’s Senior Leadership team gathered for a three-day Summit in Sydney, focused on designing Arcadia’s future.

Bringing together the Studio Leads, Principals and business leaders from around Australia and New Zealand, together with the Advisory Board, the Summit gave everyone the opportunity to step back, reflect, and look ahead to shape the next three years.

At the centre of the Summit’s agenda was Arcadia’s Strategy, with sessions and workshops designed to interrogate the future direction of the business, identify opportunities and define next steps. Facilitated by James Chapman of Maximus, a thought-provoking line up of industry leaders and Knowledge Holders joined the group throughout the Summit, selected because their experience and insights were closely aligned with Arcadia’s direction Arcadia and helped challenge and inspire our thinking.

Karl Mayoh, Co Founder and Director of Erilyan spoke to “Scaling a Business Through Operational Excellence”. Having founded Erilyan at the same time as Arcadia, Karl revealed personal experiences of how he and his co-founder maintained the company’s core values – transparency, open communication and a client-first mindset – through the company’s stages of growth. The people in the room appreciated Karl’s frank and honest sharing of the lessons he has learned along the way as they grew the company, while holding onto the culture they valued so highly.

It’s impossible to describe the impact of the session with Wiradjuri Elder, artist and storyteller Peter Swain. Titled “Country, Responsibility and Interconnection”, we all took our shoes off, sat on the floor and worked on a culture of connection. Using the power of story telling, Peter taught us so much about his culture, while encouraging us all to share our many personal stories to create one meaningful artwork.

Arcadia is very lucky to have Peter Mattick, Emma Shipley and Julie Savet Ward contribute their knowledge to the Advisory Board. In particular, Peter Mattick, with nearly 50 years of corporate experience, was perfectly placed to share his insights on “Developing Leadership”, not just for those in the room, but from within the company as it grows and adapts. His advice aligned with that of Karl’s – allow your leaders to make mistakes, but to have the culture to own those mistakes, fix them and learn from them. This advice fits with Arcadia’s core values.

Ninotschka Titchkosky, formerly co-CEO of BVN, and founder of Systems Reef addressed the final pillar of the strategy: “Elevating Design Excellence Through Collaboration”. As a fellow architect, her anecdotes resonated with most of the room and for the rest of us, she just made sense, with the advice and stories she shared from her time leading one of Arcadia’s collaborators, BVN. It was inspiring to hear how they focused on creating a future-focused strategy with emotion and purpose, and the results this had with growing a successful practice.

Returning to daily operations, our leaders have continued to make time, not only to present the company-wide Arcadia Strategy to our broader group, but to work with their teams to build studio and business unit strategies working together Under One Umbrella to create future success.

We look forward to carrying these conversations forward to inform the next phase of Arcadia’s Strategy:

After a decade spent refining their Country-led approach to design, Arcadia has expanded its offering in Connecting and Designing with Country by establishing Arcadia First Nations Consultancy.

Led by Luciano Svagelli, this commitment continues Arcadia’s ethos that every project includes First Nations knowledge, engagement and understanding; it all begins with Country. Luci is a descendant of the Pitjantjara and Luritja peoples from the central deserts and was raised within the Redfern Aboriginal community. He is working alongside Noah Orman, proud Birri and Guugu Yimithirr man, to deepen Arcadia’s relationships with First Nations communities and provide the connections and consultation for the property industry.

“Under the New South Wales Government Architect’s Connecting with Country Framework, the NSW built environment has been committed to developing a Country-centred approach, guided by Aboriginal people, to inform the planning, design and delivery of projects. While it’s been gratifying to see this industry-wide commitment, the pressure placed on such a small proportion of the population to share their knowledge and skills is evident, and this is one of the reasons we established have the Arcadia First Nations Consultancy,” says Alex Longley, Managing Director of Arcadia.

“Luci and his team are working with developers, architects, urban designers and other consultants, to provide services and connections that support the growing demand for First Nations consulting. They’re focused on ensuring the appropriate processes, cultural protocols, and alignment with Cultural Intellectual Property is maintained, while facilitating co-design programs and processes to deliver meaningful and efficient experiences, through all stages of built environment projects.”

Arcadia’s First Nations Design Services include:

/ Walkshop preparation, facilitation and reporting

/ Connecting With Country Reports

/ Designing with Country Reports

/ Design integration, storytelling and idea translation

/ Co-design

/ Community engagement and relationship building

Please get in touch with Luci or Alex if you’d like to discuss a project with the First Nations Design Consultancy at lucianos@arcadiala.com.au or alexl@arcadiala.com.au.

Barangaroo Station Park has been awarded an Australian Good Design Gold Award and the AILA National Award of Excellence for Infrastructure.

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) National Awards Jury commented about Barangaroo Station Park:

“The design team is commended for skillfully resolving the complexities of a metro station entrance brief in a site with layered histories and stories, creating a place of calm at the juncture of multiple circulation routes. The success of this project comes from the team’s ability to create a seamless transition around the station’s entrance by deftly stiching into the adjoining public spaces – the urban streetscape, the biodiverse parklands and the constructed sandstone cove. Cultural and historic stories are layered thoughtfully within the public ream, allowing the stories of this place to be appreciated. While primarily a place for movement, the public domain also creates a generous area for passive enjoyment of Nawi Cove.

Winning a Gold Award in the Built Environment: Place Design category, the Australian Good Design Award jury has commented about the project:

“With its backdrop of Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo Station Park has become one of Sydney’s most memorable station plazas. A brilliant project, which must be one of the most scenic metro entries in the world. The landscape design integrates the elements of metro portal, foreshore, pedestrian paths and artwork in an integrated manner. The effect is a place that at the most basic level feels good, contributing to this special setting for the long term. Exiting a train station is a functional aspect of everyday life, this place is well considered with purposeful elements connecting an adjunct of current and future spaces – often the hardest design challenge of all.

The project demonstrates a strategic response to a complex site that has resulted in a place that seamlessly connects with the wider precinct. Much more than a transport hub, the sublime space tells a story of connection with country and archaeology in a compelling and innovative way. The use of LIM technology for optimisation and to measure impact is highly commendable. The integrated use of oyster shells as an aggregate is subtle, yet a beautiful gesture to the cultural heritage of the place. The Jury would like to particularly commend the design of the seats and their beautiful form and depth of thought. This project truly sets a very high bar for design excellence in this category. Well done!”

“We are proud of the Arcadia team and their contribution to this complex project, which so successfully instils the site’s heritage and Indigenous culture through artwork and interpretation. The design and delivery of Barangaroo Station Park allowed us to combine Arcadia’s unique approach with our technological innovation to create an iconic and memorable station plaza and park,” said Sydney Principal landscape Architect, Chris Tidswell.

Congratulations to everybody who worked on Barangaroo Station Park; it was a truly collaborative project that integrated the talents of many to deliver this legacy outcome.”

Arcadia is announcing the promotion of eight people across the practice, including Jason Kocmar to Principal in Canberra and Jack Stevenson to Principal in Newcastle.

“At Arcadia we know that our people are motivated by the opportunity to make a difference through their work as well as the prospects we offer for career advancement. We are delighted to recognise outstanding performance and leadership of these individuals, who have demonstrated dedication to Arcadia’s vision through driving success, embodying our cultural values, and consistently enabling their teams to deliver outstanding designs,” says Alex Longley, Founding Director, Arcadia.

Arcadia’s studios in Canberra and Newcastle are experiencing an increased demand for high-quality and contemporary landscape architecture and urban design with more families leaving the state capitals and a generational expectation for healthy, accessible outdoor community spaces.

“With demonstrated expertise, leadership and project stewardship, Jason Kocmar and Jack Stevenson are both recognised as dedicated contributors to the built environment in their local markets, understanding both the needs of our clients and the current and future needs of the communities who will be using the spaces that Arcadia designs. We are excited by additional unique skillsets and perspective they will bring to the broader Principal group,” says Longley.

“Jack Wilkins from Canberra and Cody Hooper from Newcastle have both been promoted to Senior Landscape Architect in recognition of the advancements they have made in their design skills, project complexity and leadership, as well as for the collaborative contributions they make to the culture of their studio environments.”

In the Sydney studio, Daniel Spicer is now a Senior Associate, Han Chen is moving to Associate, Rafi Grant is a Senior Landscape Architect and Elaine Wang is a Senior Urban Designer.

“We are delighted to acknowledge one of our long-term team members, Daniel Spicer, whose contribution to Arcadia is evident through the design excellence of his award-winning work, including Wadanggari Park and Friedlander Place, and the impact he has on our culture. Having first joined Arcadia in 2016 as a Graduate Landscape Architect, Daniel took time working away from Arcadia but returned in 2023 after recognising our shared values and the opportunity to advance his career,” says Longley.

“The other promotions in our Sydney studio reflect the innovative design thinking being applied by Han, Rafi and Elaine to resolve complex issues resulting in exceptional outcomes across our landscape architecture and urban design projects.”

Arcadia congratulates everyone who has been recognised with a promotion this year and looks forward to seeing everyone thrive in their new roles, as we work to create landscapes that transform lives and communities, delivering meaningful, sustainable spaces that resonate deeply with their inhabitants.

The post Arcadia’s 2025 Promotions Announced including two new Principals first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Arcadia has crossed the Tasman to open a studio in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Arcadia New Zealand will be led by renowned landscape architect, Mike Thomas. Mike will work closely with Arcadia’s Managing Director and Lincoln University alumni, Michael Barnett to establish Auckland, Arcadia’s seventh studio location and the first outside of Australia for the design practice. Having built a reputation as a leader in Australia for their award-winning projects and First Nations design approach, Arcadia eager to align this approach with New Zealand bi-cultural design practice.

“Many of our collaborators were founded in New Zealand or have presence here, and with an increasing number of opportunities to work together on projects, we recognised that the time was right to launch Arcadia in Auckland, with industry expert Mike Thomas leading the new studio,” says Michael Barnett, Managing Director of Arcadia.

Mike Thomas joins Arcadia with nearly 30 years practice experience in New Zealand, Hong Kong and China. For the last 20 years Mike led a leading design practice in New Zealand, earning a reputation as one of the country’s leading designers specialising in public realm, infrastructure, and regenerative design.

“The chance to establish a new design studio in New Zealand is a once-in-a-career opportunity for me to leverage my accumulated experience and my alignment with the cultural design approach that is embedded in Arcadia’s DNA. Arcadia is a design practice with an innovative approach to landscape architecture which complements the way I approach my own work, pursuing the opportunities that unlock great projects for our clients and communities,” says Mike Thomas, Principal, Arcadia Auckland.

We have some of the best landscape architects in the world practicing in New Zealand, and with the establishment of an international studio, our local team can draw on the diverse thinking and experience of 80 plus landscape architects and urban designers. Drawing on the resources of Arcadia’s other studios we have the capacity to deliver projects of any size or scale, led by a NZ-based team with the local knowledge needed to balance a solid understanding of regulatory frameworks with intricate cultural and community nuance.”

Managing Director Michael Barnett is excited by the potential in a market that he knows so well.

“I was born and raised on the Canterbury Plains and while I’ve been based in Sydney for 20 years, I’ve always had the desire to bring Arcadia’s design approach and expertise to projects in Aotearoa New Zealand. At Arcadia, our industry-leading approach to Indigenous collaboration spans the entire design process, allowing us to weave cultural threads through each project and I believe there is alignment in our thinking and processes, and the cultural design approach often applied to landscapes in New Zealand.”

Arcadia’s studio is located in Britomart in central Auckland.

Coverage of the new studio appeared in leading NZ economic publication, Business Desk here.

Working with some of the best minds, including Bangawarra, Supermanoeuvre, Hoyne, Civille, Studio ESEM, PAM, Muru Mittigar and Landskip Lab, we designed the park to tell the ancient stories of the local Aboriginal Peoples by allowing visitors to open their spirit and mind to experience Country through all their senses.

Arcadia’s Canberra-based design studio has taken top honours in the University of Canberra’s (UC) Design Competition for University Park.

“This is a significant win for Arcadia’s Canberra studio, which was selected following a rigorous competition process,” says Alex Longley, Managing Director of Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Should the development of University Park go ahead, it will set a benchmark for quality open space on the University’s campus in Bruce, ACT. Arcadia’s competition scheme conceptualised the space as an outstanding parkland, with a Country-led narrative that creates a legacy for communities to live, gather, learn, play and grow, alongside the establishment of natural assets.

“Arcadia’s team consists of UC Landscape Architecture alumni, who are familiar with the site and the opportunities that could be derived from a legacy project of this nature, making success in this competition especially meaningful for them. The cross-studio competition response included the involvement of Arcadia’s Indigenous Landscape Strategist, who was integral in refining the team’s Country-led narrative,” says Longley.

The landscape concept development is the initial phase of the first major open space program of work outlined in UC’s Campus Master Plan (2020 – 2040), and is closely aligned with the University’s decadal strategy, Connected.

“This landscape concept incorporates the essence of UC’s vision of walking together. It blends our education and research activities seamlessly and considers community interaction and engagement as key elements captured in our Campus Master Plan,” said Professor Lucy Johnston, Interim Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra.

“The concept of a living laboratory in the heart of our campus is an exciting prospect for the UC community, Belconnen, and the broader ACT community. The design’s distinctive connection to Country is particularly exciting, as it captures quite beautifully the inclusion and involvement of the Ngunnawal community and other Indigenous neighbours.”

The vision for University Park is to transform it into a place where you can ‘choose your own course’. Arcadia’s concept recognises that long before the University of Canberra came into being, this was a place of learning for Ngunnawal People, where the scar trees, native plantings and creek lines were embedded in their way of life and used to share knowledge.

While the Park is intended to be a functional space providing a diversity of passive, active, and educational amenities for a broad spectrum of the community, the cornerstone of Arcadia’s design concept was the use of significant environmental principles including water harvesting, the retention and protection of vegetation communities and the reestablishment of endemic planting communities. The concept is intended to leverage the University’s research and educational programs to inform the design of a living laboratory that will play an important role in fostering learning habitats.

The post Arcadia wins University of Canberra Design Competition for University Park first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Arcadia is delighted to announce that QUT student, Jada Gilbert, is the recipient of the 2023 Arcadia Landscape Architecture Scholarship for Indigenous Students. In its third year, Jada is the sixth student to be awarded the Arcadia scholarship and by the end of 2023, three First Nations students will have graduated from Landscape Architecture.

“We are proud that we are able to support these exceptional and inspiring individuals through their studies, and delighted to announce that Jada is the latest recipient, in recognition of her achievements and potential in the field of landscape architecture and urban design,” says Alex Longley, Principal of Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

“We are excited to work with Jada as she develops her design and industry skills and builds on her knowledge of her ancestors to understand how this can be used to her future work to deliver positive outcomes for Country and community.”

Currently studying a double degree in Landscape Architecture and Urban Development, Jada impressed the panel with her passion for the built environment, having received an Award for Planning Excellence for her Year 12 Geography project.

“My passion for the planning aspect of geography led me to study Urban Development while the study of Landscape Architecture will allow me to expand my knowledge of the natural aspect of planning. I believe this will allow me to further value the land as it embodies the traditional First Nations knowledge of spirits, places, land uses and ecology,” says Jada Gilbert.

While Jada completes her studies, she will be working in the Arcadia Brisbane studio as a student Landscape Architect.

“As year 12 students around the country heading into their final exams, and we hope to see more First Nations students considering Landscape Architecture as a career option that allows them to create a meaningful difference in caring for Country through design and sharing of Traditional Knowledge,” says Longley.

About the Scholarship

Arcadia established the scholarship to encourage Indigenous students to enter Landscape Architecture, as proper representation of Indigenous people in this industry will increase the capacity to care for and connect with Country and place. This will result in better performing, more meaningful spaces where stories and knowledge can be shared, and true custodianship and care is allowed for.

The scholarship is currently offered through the following universities:

Queensland University of Technology

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

University of New South Wales

University of Western Australia

University of Canberra

University of Technology Sydney

All Indigenous students enrolled in an AILA-accredited Landscape Architecture program are invited to apply for an Arcadia scholarship. Each scholarship will provide support to each student for the duration of the course. This scholarship will be available to one student per university, per year.

Arcadia offers additional support to scholarship students including:

Introductions to senior staff to provide mentoring, career and coursework advice and guidance

Opportunity to take on a paid student role within one of our studios in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra.

Opportunity to build their network of Indigenous contacts, by connecting them to other Indigenous designers, practitioners and Indigenous Knowledge Holders.

Arcadia is delighted to announce that Laree Barney, a proud Kalkatungu woman with connections to Winnam, has been awarded the QUT Indigenous Landscape Architecture for 2021, after impressing the interview panel with her mature outlook and passion for design.

First established at the University of NSW in 2017, Arcadia offers scholarships for Indigenous students to study Landscape Architecture at eight universities nationally.

“Arcadia established the scholarship to increase the representation of Indigenous practitioners in the Landscape Architecture industry. Having Indigenous students like Laree, on their own personal journey to further develop their understanding of Country and heritage, share their knowledge and perspective with their peers, will increase our industry’s capacity to connect and care for Country,” said Alex Longley, Founding Principal of Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Laree Barney has commenced her first year of Landscape Architecture at QUT and will be supported with studio experience and mentoring from the Arcadia Queensland team.

“I am honoured to have been awarded Arcadia’s scholarship while I’m studying Landscape Architecture at QUT. I was drawn to this degree because I am passionate about sustainability, design, and the ongoing Care of Country using First Nations knowledge,” said Laree Barney.

About the Scholarship

When Arcadia Principals, Alex Longley and Michael Barnett, realised the poor representation of First Peoples in Landscape Architecture, they launched the Arcadia Indigenous Landscape Architecture Scholarship to address this issue.

The intention of the scholarship is to encourage Indigenous students to enter landscape architecture, as proper representation of Indigenous people in this industry will increase the capacity to care for Country and connect with Country and place and to create better performing, more meaningful spaces which share stories and knowledge, allowing for true custodianship and care.

The post Aged Care: Using landscape design to promote health & activity first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Arcadia has been working on designs for a number of specialist aged care and retirement developments, using our expertise to design landscapes that help promote an active lifestyle and maintain health.

It is becoming increasingly important to find cost-effective ways to encourage activity in our aging population. Studies are showing that landscapes that promote and encourage healthy behaviour, such as walking, can be a long-term, cost-efficient investment, when compared to programmed activities which may require ongoing costs and staff support as a continued service.

When designing for aging residents, Arcadia’s plans focus on easy access to the outdoors, as time outside has been shown to provide many health benefits, including improved sleeping patterns, reduced pain, improved mental health and even increased longevity.

Landscape features which have been found to increase the time spent outdoors for residents in aged care developments include:

Visual link to outdoor spaces when indoors

Views of birds and wildlife

The provision of round trip walkways

Our teams are currently designing a number of landscapes and open spaces in aged care projects, including HammondCare Cardiff; Circa Norwest and SummitCare. Each development has its own set of priorities, however they share a desire to use the landscape to promote health.

HammondCare Cardiff

This development will accommodate 99 residents and 50 on-site staff members with special treatment services for dementia care and complex medical needs. Global best practice thinking in dementia care recognises that a familiar environment will help relieve anxiety and confusion for residents, so Arcadia has designed HammondCare Cardiff to recreate a typical Australian suburban environment. Landscape elements will include:

Individually landscaped spaces at the front of each residential facility, evoking the feeling of neighbourhood front gardens and making it easy for residents to recognise their home.

A central park, including a children’s playground for visitors, and an area with a cafe, local shops and services, will provide the social hub for the community,

A managed bush edge will give a visual connection with nature and a calming outlook away from other human activities.

The planting palette will include a species selection aimed to engage the senses through use of colour, texture and scent.

Circa Norwest

Pedestrian access and circulation is key to the landscape for the Circa Norwest retirement community. The vision for Circa Norwest will encourage walking with the following landscape elements:

Multiple walkway systems which will allow residents and visitors to move easily through the community to access various open spaces.

A range of passive and active outdoor amenity including an alfresco café precinct, private communal gardens, the Community Hub, bowling green and sunning lawn

A boardwalk system circulating the lake, which will encourage walking, as well as providing viewing platforms and sloping lawns for picnics and recreation.

The detention lake will feature planting, designed to attract birdlife and to evoke a natural lake setting.

SummitCare Baulkham Hills

A number of private and communal courtyards areas provide opportunities for social and physical activities but also a place for solitude and relaxation. A ‘grand manor’ style entrance to the facility is enhanced via avenue plantings and flowering native and exotic shrub species:

Range of different outdoor spaces from large communal courtyards to rooftop terrace gardens.

Outdoor cinema set within a lush, tranquil setting of small canopy trees and shade tolerant understory plantings.

Quiet pockets of seating surrounded by flowering and leafy plants provide places for families and their loved ones to enjoy the outdoors.

Combination of native and exotic species aiding in reducing water usage, whilst also providing vibrant colours and scents.

Arcadia wins new projects with University of Canberra and St Ignatius; completes work for Monte Sant’ Angelo and MLC School

Building on their proven experience in the education space, Arcadia Landscape Architecture has recently won significant projects with The University of Canberra and St Ignatius’ College.

Arcadia will be working with architecture firm, The Billard Leece Partnership (BLP), to upgrade Building 7 for the Faculty of Arts and Design at The University of Canberra. The project will include refurbishment and enhancement of the teaching and office spaces, the courtyard teaching spaces and the landscape connections to the campus, as well as an improved arrival and entry experience.

For St Ignatius’ College (Riverview), Arcadia will be working with architects PMDL on a masterplan for the entire senior school campus. The masterplan will provide a framework for the future physical development of the College on the current Lane Cove campus, ensuring the best outcomes for teaching and learning, as well as ongoing support for the Riverview community.

“We’re thrilled to be working with the University of Canberra and St Ignatius’, given our depth of experience in the education sector,” says Alex Longley, principal of Arcadia Landscape Architecture. “We’ve been involved on a range of high-quality education projects recently, with a focus on providing outdoor learning spaces and improved open space amenity for students and the school communities, at schools which include Monte Sant’ Angelo, MLC Burwood and St Ignatius’.”

“With their proven track records for designing and delivering complex and innovative projects, we are looking forward to the opportunity to work with both BLP and PMDL.”

Monte Sant’ Angelo

Arcadia has recently finished the O’Regan Arts and Cultural Common at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney, working with Brewster Hjorth Architects. The project included an upgraded entry to the school, a rooftop green space and landscaped terraces, with incidental seating provided for students through a range of steps and walls.

“We’re really proud of the work that we’ve completed on the O’Regan Arts and Cultural Common at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College,” says Michael Barnett, principal at Arcadia Landscape Architecture. “A stand out feature of the project is the thermoformed Corian feature walls, which give visual impact and a contemporary approach to the new performing arts building and provide a striking contrast with the heritage chapel in the background.”

The MLC School

Arcadia has recently completed the tender documentation for the MLC School, working with BVN Donovan Hill. The landscape design of the two large courtyard spaces has been derived from a study of social distances and behaviours of school environments, specifically addressing those of an all-female environment. This has been addressed through the use of a set of geometric “pods” and seating edges to provide a new heart to the main campus and facilitate a new learning environment at MLC School. The landscape works are currently under tender with construction due to commence next year for Stage One delivery at the beginning of 2017.

With our industry in the thick of Awards season, Arcadia Landscape Architecture is thrilled with the recognition The Platform has received so far. To date this recently completed project has received the following honours:

Best in Affordability in NSW/ACT in the UDIA Awards for Excellence

Silver in the Landscape Design category of the 2015 Sydney Design Awards

Finalist in the 2015 Think Brick Awards – Commercial category

Arcadia Landscape Architecture worked on the landscape design for The Platform, which provided 88 designer affordable housing apartments for essential city workers on lower incomes. Located at North Eveleigh, the project was for CityWest Housing, a not-for-profit specialising in providing quality, affordable housing.

About the Project

Situated within the distinctive Carriageworks Precinct, The Platform site is of high historic, aesthetic and technological significance. Arcadia was briefed to design open spaces which would retain the Victorian and industrial heritage of the workshops, with an emphasis on creating zones for residents to gather and interact.

Client

CityWest Housing (CWH) is a not-for-profit, community based organisation, established in 1994, with a charter to provide long-term, secure affordable housing for rent. CWH prides itself on creating buildings that are equal to, or better, in design, appearance and quality than other residential flats in the immediate vicinity of their developments, to ensure that CWH affordable housing can only ever be seen as quality residential accommodation.

Length of project

May 2013 – March 2015

Brief

Unique to this brief, was the way CWH highlighted the role of a Community Liaison Officer who has the responsibility for fostering sharing and engagement within the resident community. The aim is to encourage a healthier, happier internal community and Arcadia was asked to create a dynamic, cultural space for all to enjoy. It was essential that Arcadia’s designs provided adaptable spaces, with room for passive play, exercise or simply relaxing, including areas for gardening and growing vegetables and herbs.

Context and materiality

The setting for The Platform development is rich in context, surrounded with adaptive reuse and heritage built form. The predominance of brick, concrete and weathered steel reflects the prior functions of the site and situates it within the continuum of urban development in Sydney.

In line with Master Plan principles, Arcadia’s landscape design interpreted the maintenance shed tracks that once crossed this site, through a combination of concrete and steel edging to create a courtyard that draws the character of the surrounds into the site from the east.

Once the Arcadia team realised the potential for the existing original elements left on site from its previous industrial use, they jumped through hoops to repurpose and recycle the materials. The result is a range of decorative and useful elements which give authenticity to the design, as well as a providing a cost-effective and sustainable solution. Elements include:

Reuse of salvaged timber beams from the original building for seating benches, expressed decking bearers and pergola uprights;

Repurposing an old air tank as a water feature;

Creating decorative elements from original railway ticket stamps, warehouse lighting and machinery; and

Recycling old train platform benches to use for seating within the landscape design.

Project completion

The result is a setting that connects residents to the unique heritage of The Platform site whilst contributing to the social atmosphere. Residents are able to make use of the following open spaces:

Courtyard : Designed as the primary social space for The Platform community, the Courtyard’s design reflects the heritage of the Carriageworks precinct, with embedded steel edging giving a sense of the rail tracks of the past. The Courtyard includes a range of seating, a communal vegetable garden, turf open space, raised timber deck, gravel courtyard and gathering courtyard with movable furniture.

Roof Terrace: With local and city views, this breakout space will offer year round amenity with ample solar access. The rooftop includes shade structures and planting to allow for localised microclimate control, movable tables, chairs and daybeds for use by groups of all sizes, an outdoor kitchen and a communal vegetable garden.

The Streetscape: areas on the northern and western street frontages provide space for residents and locals to enjoy the winter sun with the installation of large timber seating elements. At entries, the paving hosts a series of original steel ticket stamps embedded into the surface, connecting the site with the history of the area, with unused tracks still visible in the surface of the passing road.

Urban Forest: this precinct will be characterised by a landscape which encourages biodiversity in a post-industrial area of Sydney which traditionally has a constrained ecological integrity. Utilising native and indigenous trees, the urban forest provides shelter and habitat for local fauna and stormwater filtration during storm events. The canopy will help to moderate the local climate – slowing wind and reducing the urban heat island effect during the summer months.

The fact that The Platform is receiving such positive recognition in different Award categories shows that the project team, which includes Architectus and Richard Crookes Construction, has helped deliver a project that residents will be proud to live in. Arcadia looks forward to watching the landscape mature and seeing the materials weather and further adapt to their surroundings.

With so many Arcadia projects under construction or in the pipeline in South Sydney, the team stopped to take a look at where we fit into this area. We were amazed by the size of the footprint our small company has on such a high growth area.

It’s no secret that South Sydney is one of the hottest development areas in the NSW residential market, with over $500 million in sales of residential sites last year. In the Green Square precinct alone, nearly 10,000 apartments are due for completion over the next four years and the surrounding suburbs of Rosebery and Mascot aren’t far behind.

With so much transformation happening in this area, the Arcadia team is eager to see how our landscape designs will help new residents weave into the fabric of the existing community. All our designs include public and private spaces which aim to help people connect, though playgrounds, seating and areas for community events, as well as promoting health and well-being, with zones for activity and quiet reflection.

Stay tuned for more exciting news on the projects we’re working on in this area.

Arcadia's landscape design set to revitalise Friedlander Place.

The post St Leonards: Arcadia’s role in masterplan to revitalise prime location first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Arcadia recently worked with a consortium of developers, including Charter Hall and Leightons, on a Planning Proposal to rezone adjacent commercial properties to enable mixed use development at Friedlander Place and 472-494 Pacific Highway, St Leonards.

With commercial properties currently in over supply in St Leonards, in part due to increased competition from nearby North Ryde and Chatswood, the masterplan offered an opportunity to revitalise an ageing precinct, as well as delivering homes closer to the city. Arcadia’s designs successfully demonstrated how the rezoning would improve public domain activation, circulation space and provide considerable public benefits. In November, 2014, Lane Cove Council voted in favour of rezoning the area.

Arcadia’s plans took a currently underutilised and tired public space and transformed it into a vibrant new hub of local community activity. The landscape design illustrates the potential for enhanced pedestrian laneway connections to Christie Street and Nicholson Street, and the consolidation of a significant new area of public open space in a clearly visible, accessible and north-facing destination, which is currently lacking on Pacific Highway. Active café and retail frontages, public art, accessible water play, moveable seating elements, and an outdoor cinema will provide a range of exciting opportunities for active and passive engagement.

Arcadia also worked with Leightons on the landscape design concept for the accompanying major new proposed mixed residential and retail development of 472-494 Pacific Highway. The Lobby area for the development will seek to establish a seamless connection to the adjacent Friedlander Place, with a significant new public plaza inspired by the local Lane Cove native bush and coastal cliff narrative. The plaza will integrate the residential tower lobbies with active cafe and retail frontages for improved social connection to St Leonards.

Arcadia’s design concept for the development features Sky Gardens on the upper residential tower levels, which will offer a range of outdoor areas which can be utilised by residents in a variety of ways. A private resident garden will also be included on level 1.

In June, Leightons sold the site to Mirvac for $121million. With plans to include 7,500 sq m of commercial space, in addition to residential units, Arcadia is currently working with Mirvac as it takes the site through a section 96 application.

Council sought Expressions of Interest to participate in the competition which aims to generate ideas for the large public domain space on top of the Rosenthal Car Park redevelopment. The public domain open space has been sited to act effectively as an adjunct outdoor precinct associated with nearby Lane Cove Plaza. The designs produced will be presented to the Lane Cove Community during a formal consultation process during November and December 2015. Feedback received from this will inform future stages to deliver the future public realm for this exciting development. Arcadia will utilise the expertise of Saunders Global to inform sound design concepts that complement the retail functionality of the car park facility and enhance the local community.

The competition period will run from September 15th to October 17th.

The post Arcadia Selected for a Public Domain Design Competition first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

We’re happy to announce the growth of the Arcadia Team with two new fulltime staff. While this has led to some tight working conditions (until we shift to our new premises in early May – STAY TUNED!!! ) we welcome Matthew Simpkins and Nicholas Pierson and look forward to the skill sets and experience that they bring to the Arcadia Team.

Matthew has joined us from Taylor Brammer and brings extensive experience from work on a variety of commercial, residential and open space projects. Matt has been involved on a range of design projects including the Landscape Master Plan for the University of Woolongong the Master Plan of Bulli Brickworks Residential, a Baptist Community Services Aged Care project in Kellyville and the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre to name a few. Matt is passionate about innovative design and likes to challenge the way we perceive and interact with our environments.

In addition we also welcome Nicholas who has recently graduated from UWA after completing his final year at UNSW. Nick has previous experience in the design and construction industry in Perth where he was the lead designer implementing residential and estate developments. Nick has keen interest in the urban realm and facilitating strong relationships between people and place.

On other exciting news for our team, Verena Hall is currently on maternity leave to have her first child with her partner Dan. We wish them luck with their first child and look forward to Verena’s return in the hopefully not too distant future.

The post Arcadia Welcomes Matt and Nick! first appeared on Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

Following the Development Applications that were lodged by GPT prior to Christmas 2012, the local Channel 9 News team carried out a feature story on two proposed developments of the Casuarina Square Shopping Centre – Litchfield Square, and a sleeved Student Accommodation facility to sit above the existing centre.

Casuarina Square is the largest shopping centre in the Northern Territory, located in Casuarina in Darwin’s northern suburbs. Owned and operated by GPT, the development masterplan aims to expand the current leasable area while making strong moves to activate the streetscape and public domain areas which are associated with the centre.

The student accommodation facility, a six story building, will house over 300 students from Charles Darwin University. The façade of the building will contain a series of large scattered and suspended planters, creating a green façade of trees and accents complemented by climbing and hanging plants.

From a planting design perspective, the landscape is themed to work with the tropical planting of Darwin, using deep greens and large canopy plantings to provide protection during both the wet and dry seasons.

Arcadia’s involvement with the Casuarina Square masterplan and student housing development has been acknowledged in the news. To check out the story and the two projects click on the link below.
