Arcadia Queensland was thrilled to attend the official opening of the Fortitude Valley State Secondary College, the first new inner-city high school in Brisbane in 50 years. Stage One of the school was officially opened to the 150 new Year 7 students by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Education Minister Grace Grace.

Arcadia, working with Hutchinson Builders and architects ThomsonAdsett, is delivering the landscape component for the Fortitude Valley State Secondary College, which will be Brisbane’s first vertical school.

The stage one landscape for the temporary school site includes lush planting, seating, handball courts an open lawn area and shade structures. In the coming months the main school oval will be completed, utilising large shade trees around the edge of the new oval and a terraced seating area will be delivered to provide shade and amenity for students to enjoy. The documentation of the terrace in particular has allowed Arcadia to use their construction knowledge to find creative solutions to overcome buildability challenges.

Arcadia has been applying their extensive experience in education design to deliver a flexible landscape which can be used to facilitate learning, recreation and structured school gatherings, including assemblies and performances.

Arcadia’s capabilities also draw on the team’s proficiency working with prefabricated products and furniture design. For Fortitude Valley State Secondary College, this means the ability to deliver cost-effective outcomes which also provide amenity, aesthetics and flexibility of space, as well as having a strong consideration and impact to structure programming.
