Wadanggari Park has been received a Good Design Award at Australia’s International Good Design Awards for Excellence in Design and Innovation.

Recognised in the Architectural Design Place Design category, the Arcadia team received the Award at the gala ceremony, which showcased the pinnacle of design excellence and was attended by over 1000 distinguished guests from design, architecture, engineering and business sectors.

This year’s theme, “The Design Effect” underscored the crucial role design plays in shaping better products, services, spaces, and experiences while driving the transition to a more sustainable, less carbon-intensive future. The Australian Good Design Awards highlighted how design not only enhances functionality and aesthetics but also contributes significantly to business success and societal advancement.

“Arcadia is delighted that Wadanggari Park was among the standout winners, receiving a coveted “Green Tick” in recognition of demonstrating best practice exemplary design. Wadanggari Park is a highly complex project which has created much-needed open space out of thin air for St Leonards – the result of innovative thinking and a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach,” says Alex Longley, Managing Director of Arcadia Landscape Architecture.

The Jury praised Wadanggari Park commenting:

Wadanggari Park, the only park in Australia built over a railway line, exemplifies innovative urban design by integrating green space into a dense urban environment. The park’s design connects people with Indigenous narratives and natural bushland, representing a forward-thinking approach to space utilisation in Sydney. The Jury congratulates the team for their creative and technically challenging design, which thoughtfully incorporates Indigenous symbols and narratives while optimising space. The park stands as a testament to modern design’s potential to enrich urban living and cultural connection.

Rachel Wye, Managing Director of Good Design Australia, remarked, “This year’s Awards reflect the profound ripple effects that exceptional design can have on people, place and planet. The projects honoured in these Awards exemplify how thoughtful design can drive meaningful change, not only enhancing user experiences and the way people interact with the world, but also contributing to a more sustainable and more prosperous future. The Australian Good Design Awards are proud to recognise the truly inspirational work that is being done across different design disciplines, sectors and industries in Australia and overseas.”
