‘The Corner’ is the new precinct which offers a unique experience for Charlestown. It has been designed to activate the south-eastern corner of GPT’s shopping centre, Charlestown Square. The resulting is a blend of shipping container-inspired urban edge, art, entertainment spaces, combined with a unique internal landscape. This is how public spaces, landscape and artwork can create truly memorable experiences and a space which celebrates Charlestown’s cultural and coastal identity.
Working with GPT and H&E Architects, Arcadia provided a shared vision and understood the value proposition for GPT vision was to transform this tired corner space into a memorable retail anchored corner. Retail branding, artwork, shade, weather protection were project requirements while trying to create a narrative and connect it back to the things that make Charlestown unique.
The story of Charlestown has been infused into ‘The Corner’ in every material, every space, every plant, every lighting fixture, piece of furniture and the art.
The Corner has become a popular urban hangout, designed for 18-hour activation of the space, with the community relishing the casual, sociable al fresco atmosphere. The character of Charlestown is celebrated in the range of high-quality food and beverage, performance and curated works by local artists displayed through the precinct.
