Kiaora Lane was opened in 2014 as part of the Kiaora Lands redevelopment, a $110m joint venture with Woolworths with the aim to revitalise Double Bay. Originally designed as a shared way, the laneway was quickly closed to traffic due to the high level of activation of pedestrians to this new public space. The success of this new public amenity makes it the ideal site for community events. Plans are underway to further enhance this space for open air community amenity.
The landscape design provides a high quality pedestrian experience, including feature paving finishes, custom seating elements, and shade tree planting to Kiaora Lane. The pedestrian connection to Patterson Street offers further seating opportunities, in addition to bicycle parking, flanked with rain-gardens and amenity planting. In addition to prioritising the pedestrian experience, another key focus of the design is the use of water sensitive urban design principles (WSUD), including segmented kerbs and planter walls, and bio-retention tree pits.
