With the transformation of the adjacent Royal Hall of Industries into a sporting facility, adaptable exterior space is critical to the Hordern Pavilion to enable a growing range of activations and uses. Increasing this usable area through the plaza and along the eastern edge of the building is a primary driver of the proposed works, creating a physical connection between Driver Ave and Errol Flynn Blvd.
In collaboration with Populous, Arcadia has designed a landscape master plan for the Hordern Plaza which responds to the functional requirements of event and entertainment service provider, Playbill. The Plaza space will welcome people to the precinct during non-event mode and contribute to the public realm offering. Access during event mode will also be accommodated creating a new pedestrian desire line.
A priority is to provide operational space to complement the Hordern Pavilion facility, facilitating queueing, cloaking and security for events. In order to accommodate the heavily activated program and the requirement for rapid transformation of the space, Arcadia’s design is approached through a series of layers. Each of these layers offers different amenity and interest but they all share transformational qualities. These layers are: Plaza Canvas, Furniture, Fence+Framework, and Activation Modules.
