Arcadia was engaged by the Walker Corporation to prepare an Urban Context Report and Concept Development Application for the Appin (Part) Precinct – Release Areas 1, 3 and 4. Arcadia’s landscape vision for the site is to educate and heal, creating best outcomes for a site with such environmental and cultural significance, to be protected and commemorated in its future as the location of 9,000 new homes.
The landscape design for the Appin Masterplan aims to create an active and adventurous lifestyle with designed spaces that are accessible and usable for all, as well as ensuring riparian restoration, treatment of water on site and the creation of green streets. The Appin Landscape Masterplan includes strategies for:
/ Re-vegetation of cleared former rural lands to achieve a 40% tree canopy target
/ Protection of cultural values and heritage significance which includes extensive engagement with the Aboriginal community
/ Protection of koala habitat corridors and biodiversity
/ Provision of significant biodiversity habitat expansion and native revegetation of local vegetation communities to enhance local flora and fauna populations and riverine ecologies
/ Delivery of a regional park (approximately 21ha) as part of an open space network that also includes six local parks
/ More than 15km pedestrian and bike loop paths linking a series of active and passive open spaces and creating connections to the broader Appin precinct.
The project is aligned with strategic land use planning, State and local government policies and infrastructure delivery. The development requires a landscape-based approach that protects the environment and landscape values, shaping the character of new communities. A series of residential neighbourhoods are to be delivered within the landscape corridors of the Nepean and Cataract Rivers, supported by local amenities, transit corridors and community infrastructure.
Significant and ongoing consultation with Department of Planning and Environment, Wollondilly Shire Council and Department of Transport amongst several other stakeholders, is key to this project.
