Caloundra Shopping Centre

Arcadia designed the open space concept for a new retail redevelopment at Caloundra to bring the local coastal environment into the heart of the food, beverage and entertainment destination.

The existing Pumicestone Passage, with its folding water courses, that meanders its way through built up areas connecting to the ocean, was one of the significant drivers in shaping the design themes for the hardscape elements including pavement finishes, planting area shapes and the furniture palette throughout the retail development.

The design outcome will include streetscapes, alfresco dining areas and internal laneways through the mall, reflecting the Caloundra coastal environment to create a coherent and connected centre. Interpretive water play elements, which reference the nearby estuaries, have been integrated into the dining precinct to allow children to interact while parents can relax in close proximity. With a limited amount of space available to incorporate a children’s playground in the food and beverage precinct of the centre, Arcadia challenged the brief. Rather than incorporating a standard playspace, a stepped water feature in the centre of the precinct was deisgned, inspired by the richness of the surrounding coastal setting, for children to interact with and climb on.

Targeting 4 Star Green Star rating the carpark planting palette utilised a very drought tolerant planting palette to avoid the need for irrigation. Bio basins were also utilised throughout the centre carpark to treat stormwater runoff.
