Managing construction risk with collaboration and design

After 30 years of life with a tool belt and a hard hat, Matthew Tancred has joined the Arcadia team as Landscape Construction Manager at Arcadia, bringing an additional layer of “hands on” structural landscaping expertise to the studio.

Previously head of Glascotts Landscape Construction Matt is working with our project teams during design development to ground our documentation in feasible reality.  Matt is working directly with contractors on site, to manage construction issues and identify risks before they occur, adding value to the construction and delivery phase of our projects.. He has been invaluable on complex projects such as Campbelltown Billabong Parklands, Barangaroo Metro and the St Leonards over-rail Park and Play development – Wadanggari Park – which was delivered on time and under budget.

Understanding that construction value and lifecycle costing are some of the most challenging aspects of any project in the current climate, our teams are adept at managing risks in the construction phase through clever design, documentation and project management. For the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands project, communication has been key to delivering the project under budget and to a high standard. The team collaborated with Campbelltown Council and contractors, Landscape Solutions, to prioritise elements of the precinct, looking at alternative construction and design to ensure that the community benefits from a premium quality sport and recreation facility.

With construction underway, the recently completed pool structure includes more than 300,000 individually laid Sukabumi Stone tiles, which bring out a range of vibrant green tones in the water to reflect the natural water features of the Dharawal National Park, on which the design of the Billabong Parklands is based.

It’s still a couple of months from completion, but very exciting to see progress at the construction site of the new metro station for Barangaroo. Taken from a 50% reference design through detailed design stage, construction and construction phase services, the team is delivering a public domain that remains true to its original principles, while enhancing the design through interpretation and working closely in an interdisciplinary environment to find practical solutions with a unified design solution.

The landscape for the Sutherland Hospital Operating Theatre Upgrade is nearing completion and shaping up to be a great project with lots of detail. The project will deliver an improved arrival sequence, meeting and congregations zones, seating amenity, and respite space.
