The Bundaberg Regional Aquatic Centre has delivered a state-of-the-art heated pool to promote sports, health and recreation in the region. Sitting within the new Bundaberg Health Park, which also includes the existing Megaplex and TAFE Queensland, this new precinct will facilitate special events, as well as everyday health and fitness activities for the community.
Arcadia delivered the concourse and café layout as well as the softworks landscape for the Aquatic Centre, using a strategy that signifies the ecological pre-settlement nature throughout the low-lying wetland ecologies and waterways of the region. With a largely Indigenous planting strategy for the café and grassed spectator area within, the entrance and new car park, stormwater systems have been designed to mimic ephemeral creeks.
Reflecting the ‘inosculation’ or fusing process of the existing Moreton Bay fig trees on site, Arcadia’s design includes a flowing form of interconnected spaces throughout the site. Utilising direct lines of pedestrian access across the site, with defined edges that bring the site components together, the Health Park allows for a diversity of uses from entertainment, gathering, activity and passive recreation.
