Barangaroo Station Park has been awarded a Australian Good Design Gold Award and the AILA National Award of Excellence for Infrastructure.
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Awards Jury commented about Barangaroo Station Park:
“The design team is commended for skillfully resolving the complexities of a metro station entrance brief in a site with layered histories and stories, creating a place of calm at the juncture of multiple circulation routes. The success of this project comes from the team’s ability to create a seamless transition around the station’s entrance by deftly stiching into the adjoining public spaces – the urban streetscape, the biodiverse parklands and the constructed sandstone cove. Cultural and historic stories are layered thoughtfully within the public ream, allowing the stories of this place to be appreciated. While primarily a place for movement, the public domain also creates a generous area for passive enjoyment of Nawi Cove.
Winning a Gold Award in the Built Environment: Place Design category, the Australian Good Design Award jury has commented about the project:
“With its backdrop of Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo Station Park has become one of Sydney’s most memorable station plazas. A brilliant project, which must be one of the most scenic metro entries in the world. The landscape design integrates the elements of metro portal, foreshore, pedestrian paths and artwork in an integrated manner. The effect is a place that at the most basic level feels good, contributing to this special setting for the long term. Exiting a train station is a functional aspect of everyday life, this place is well considered with purposeful elements connecting an adjunct of current and future spaces – often the hardest design challenge of all.
The project demonstrates a strategic response to a complex site that has resulted in a place that seamlessly connects with the wider precinct. Much more than a transport hub, the sublime space tells a story of connection with country and archaeology in a compelling and innovative way. The use of LIM technology for optimisation and to measure impact is highly commendable. The integrated use of oyster shells as an aggregate is subtle, yet a beautiful gesture to the cultural heritage of the place. The Jury would like to particularly commend the design of the seats and their beautiful form and depth of thought. This project truly sets a very high bar for design excellence in this category. Well done!”
“We are proud of the Arcadia team and their contribution to this complex project, which so successfully instils the site’s heritage and Indigenous culture through artwork and interpretation. The design and delivery of Barangaroo Station Park allowed us to combine Arcadia’s unique approach with our technological innovation to create an iconic and memorable station plaza and park,” said Sydney Principal landscape Architect, Chris Tidswell.
Congratulations to everybody who worked on Barangaroo Station Park; it was a truly collaborative project that integrated the talents of many to deliver this legacy outcome.”
