UQ Chamberlain Court

The Chamberlain Courtyard revitalisation project has transformed an underutilised courtyard into a vibrant place for staff and students. The new functional layout improves the educational experience for Faculty of Nursing students by providing them a learning environment that functions as an extension to the traditional classroom.  For the wider university population, connection through the campus has been improved with the facilitation of safe and equitable access through Chamberlain Court. Stakeholder engagement and a materials reuse strategy were key to the delivery of this project on a small budget within a tight timeframe.

Flexible seating spaces encourage staff and students study outdoors. A combination of mixed seating, presentation space and bespoke furniture with integrated of charging hubs and wifi connectivity, will facilitate for a wide variety of user needs.

A powerful addition to this courtyard was the transformation of the northern courtyard wing to a Native Medicinal Garden. Drawing on traditional Bush Medicine knowledge, species were selected primarily for their use in healing, and as such, this space is intended to be used as an extension to their curriculum.  The Garden will allow students to make a connection between First Nations methods of healing and modern-day medicine, providing the opportunity for students to leave the lecture hall for peripatetic teaching expeditions.
