The University of Tasmania (UTAS) Student Accommodation Hub is located on Melville Street, within walking distance to its connecting University Campuses. The site is in close proximity to the Hobart waterfront, shopping precinct and public transport network, providing a supported, off-campus student community.
Arcadia Brisbane, working in collaboration with Nettleton Tribe, has created a new laneway to connect Hobart’s main street, Elizabeth Street, through to the future UTAS STEM site, transforming the precinct into a vibrant public space and student hub.
A new arrival node at Elizabeth Street encourages pedestrian access through the site, with seating alcoves designed for interaction and learning. Clear site lines assist with wayfinding and orientation, welcoming all uses, including skateboarding. A mural by local artist Jamin, was commissioned to celebrate aspects of local community and provide a visual attraction to the space.
The landscape design is flexible to allow for future development. A temporary green space at the end of the new pedestrian link has been designed to offer both active and passive recreation for UTAS students and general public, with basketball court and table tennis.
Residents have access to an upper level balcony space which can be used for passive amenity, with views towards Mount Wellington, and planter boxes for a communal vegetable garden.
